Lon Lon Ranch

Get a bottle and learn Epona's Song

Getting to Lon Lon Ranch

Lon Lon Ranch is in the middle of Hyrule Field. Pretty easy to notice, and you’ve probably already seen it as you’ve explored. While not strictly necessary to go here immediately after the Lost Woods, it is a pretty convenient detour.

Get a bottle of milk

This is one of the first bottles you can obtain in the game (you can get 3 bottles as Child Link). The building on the left is where Talon is sleeping with his chickens. You’ll want to go in there and play his chicken-finding game. The game works by Talon throwing 3 special chickens in the mix with the other chickens. One trick is to try to throw most of the chickens into the corner before you start. That will make it easier to find the 3 that he throws.

You’ll receive a bottle of Lon Lon Milk - you can keep the bottle!

Learn Epona’s Song

Malon will be hanging out with the horses in the middle of the field in Lon Lon Ranch.

Talk to her a few times, and eventually she’ll talk about how her mother composed this song. Take out your Ocarina in front of her at this point and she will teach you Epona’s Song.

Epona’s Song is not super useful to you as a child (although you can play it in front of a cow for free Milk). It will mostly be used as an adult to summon your horse, Epona (and also as part of the quest to obtain Epona in the first place).

Head to Kakariko Village

Now, we can finally head to Kakariko Village (the entrance is to the right of Hyrule Castle, across a short bridge).
